Are You Too Expensive?

I first saw this great video a year or two back, but then I lost track.

It was so appropriate for the problem I had just run into, I had to go search for it again.

I cringe now when I think what I did in the heat of the moment ~ I actually sent a link to this video to the CEO of a National Charity, who wanted me to host and manage two websites, and create a third, without charging him a penny.

Normally I would be happy to help any charity, social enterprise, ‘Green‘ business or a more-than-profit company, with one day of my time per month ‘pro bono’, for strategic thinking, planning and mentoring, to get them started the right way, help achieve online goals and avoid Internet pitfalls.

But this guy was ‘taking the piss’. Read More

What Chicken PECR Came Up With This Law?

EU Cookies LawJust the other day I got an email from a young lady calling herself a “Cookie Compliance Consultant”, with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

She said she was “contacting websites that are not compliant with the new EU cookie law”. Then she went on to say, “Your website is currently illegal in the EU as it’s not asking users to accept cookies”, so I started to pay attention.

According to LinkedIn she was educated at the University of Oxford and has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Intellectual Property Law.

Why wouldn’t I believe her?

But eventually, she threw the ‘sucker punch’  ~ “I am willing to make your website compliant with the new laws for a nominal fee of£25”.

Just what kind of scam is going on here? If you can believe all this nonsense, not only is the ICO making the law which renders your website “illegal”, but for a small consideration, they will fix up your website and make you “legal” again?

Nah ~ I don’t think so. Read More

An Open Letter to Marketers Who Abuse Social Media for Selfish Gain

In the Tipping Point, which I’m sure many of you have read, Gladwell talks about the rule of 150. IF you haven’t, the concept is simple. It takes 150 people to make an idea spread. I decided to see if I could take this approach to Twitter.

I created a private list of all the people that I’ve been engaging with on a daily basis so I could focus my efforts on deepening my relationships with them.

As a result, I’ve seen my traffic jump significantly and received many more comments on my blog. The point I’m trying to make is that you should nurture the relationships you have and give value to them.

So when I read this open letter by Jon Morrow, it struck a chord with me, and I thought I would share it with you. Read More
